Some facts about the country

• South Africa is a republic in the south of the African continent. The country is located in the southern hemisphere.
• When it is summer in the Netherlands, it is winter there, and when it is summer there, it is winter in the Netherlands.
• People drive on the left in South Africa.
• Cape of Good Hope (near Cape Town) is the name of the southwestern tip of Africa.
• Off the coast of Cape Town lies Robben Island. It was on this island that Nelson Mandela was detained.

Time difference

South Africa does not have summer and winter time. As a result, in the months of April through October, it is one later in South Africa than in the Netherlands and there is no time difference in winter.

Language

The main official languages are South African and English. In major cities and tourist centers, you can get by in English. Dutch is understood by many.

Currency

The means of payment in South Africa is the Rand. You can withdraw at all ATMs, provided your debit card has a Cirrus or Maestro logo. Credit cards are also accepted.

climate

The climate in South Africa depends a lot on the area you are in during the tour. A desert climate prevails in the west, with the exception of the area around Cape Town. A Mediterranean climate prevails there. In winter, however, some rain does fall in the Cape region. The south and east has a maritime climate with precipitation in all seasons. Inland, winter is dry.
